| The slot club at Harrah's terminated an introductory offer for new members that virtually gave every new member nearly one hundred dollars. In case it ever returns, this offer is described in considerable detail in the chapter entitled Thanks a Hundred. The slot club at Harrah's is a part of the first serious attempt at a nationwide system. The slot card issued in Las Vegas will work in the card readers at all Harrah's casino locations and the cash back earned at one casino location is valid at any other location with certain minor exceptions. So you can conceivably earn cash back at one Harrah_s casino and then visit another Harrah's casino you have never even seen and receive all the amenities to which you are entitled by your accumulation of slot play. In Las Vegas, Rio is also a part of this nationwide system. There are three levels of participation in the slot club at Harrah's. The levels in ascending order are called Total Gold, Total Platinum, and Total Diamond. I am a little surprised the program isn't called the Total Program but that might make it sound like a breakfast cereal program. The club's literature is dignified in not bothering the reader with the details of qualifying for the two advanced levels or the benefits to be received. Harrah's will definitely let you know if you qualify. However, for purists, I will state that based on printed information from Rio, indications are that the two advanced levels are obtained by earning, respectively, 3,000 and 10,000 Reward Credits annually. From the slot booth personnel at Harrah's, we received the usual run around when inquiring how much play was necessary to acquire a Reward Credit. "It depends on the type of machine and the denomination and . . . ." Eventually with repeated inquiries from several individuals, we came to believe that $18.75 to $20.00 coin in on a quarter video poker machine will generate two Reward Credits. So you should plan on putting $30,000 or $100,000 into video poker machines if you want to reach, respectively, Platinum or Diamonds levels. The material which follows describes the club as it relates to the most commonly held slot card, Total Gold. When inserting your slot card into a reader, you will receive three pieces of information: your name, your daily Reward Credits, and your current accumulated cash back. Occasionally, if the computer system is in heavy demand, the reader will simply display the word ACCEPTED. This is not a problem if your purpose is simply to play the machine. However, if you wish to know the appropriate information, you may have to insert your slot card repeatedly. As you play, you accumulate Reward Credits. These are also referred to as Daily Reward Credits and, if not used soon, will be lost with time, as far as complimentaries are concerned. Also as you play, you earn cash back. This too can be lost if not taken when appropriate. However, the time limit on removing the cash is quite substantial. Your cash/comps can be redeemed using ATM-like machines called Total Rewards kiosks, which most commonly dispense vouchers for cash and meals, are simple to use, and ease the burden on the slot club personnel. The cash back expires after 12 months. |

If not used, these Daily Reward Credits are apparently lost or at least sizably reduced. ATTENTION In my opinion, it is totally needless in a city like Las Vegas to play at any establishment where the slot benefits are not clear and straightforward. At a casino such as Harrah's (and similarly Rio), which is simply steps away from good competitors, it is effortless to go to adjacent casinos which will spill their guts (informatively speaking) and undoubtedly appreciate your patronage. My advice is to fully play Harrah's introductory offer (see separate chapter) and then walk away. Unless the nationwide system has particular appeal to your lifestyle, it is of limited importance. |
