Play within your limits

Last updated: August 10, 2026

Edge Finder exists to teach a disciplined, mathematical approach to slot play. That discipline only works if you are in control of your own behaviour. This page is here because the skills that make someone good at advantage play — patience, self-control, walking away on schedule — are exactly the skills that gambling problems erode first.

Advantage play is not a solution to a gambling problem

It is worth being direct about this. Learning about expected value does not make a compulsive gambling problem safer. It usually makes it more expensive, because it supplies a justification for continuing to play.

If you are chasing losses, hiding play from the people close to you, or gambling with money you need for something else, the right move is not a better strategy. It is support. There are free, confidential resources listed further down this page.

Ground rules for playing within limits

  • Set a bankroll before you go, and treat it as fixed. Only ever use money you can afford to lose entirely. Never use money set aside for rent, bills, food, healthcare, or debt.
  • Never borrow to play. Not from a card, not from a line of credit, not from a person.
  • Set a time limit and keep it. Decide when you are leaving before you arrive, and leave on schedule regardless of whether you are up or down.
  • Do not chase losses. Losing stretches are a normal feature of variance, not a signal to increase your bet size or extend your session.
  • Walk away when the play is over. Continuing to play a machine after it is no longer favourable is the single most common way a disciplined approach turns into an expensive one.
  • Do not play impaired. Avoid playing when you are drinking, tired, upset, or under financial pressure.
  • Keep it in proportion. Play should not interfere with your work, your relationships, your sleep, or your obligations.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

Consider whether any of the following are true for you, or for someone you know:

  • Playing longer, or for more money, than you intended
  • Returning another day specifically to win back what you lost
  • Hiding the extent of your play from family, friends, or a partner
  • Borrowing money, selling things, or using bills money to fund play
  • Feeling restless, irritable, or anxious when you cannot play
  • Neglecting work, family, or personal responsibilities in order to play
  • Needing to bet larger amounts to feel the same level of interest
  • Feeling guilt, shame, or secrecy about your play

If you recognised yourself in any of these, please consider reaching out to one of the independent organisations below. Every one of them is free and confidential.

Self-exclusion

Most states with legal gaming operate voluntary self-exclusion programs. These let you formally bar yourself from casino properties for a fixed period — often one year, five years, or for life — and they are enforced by the properties themselves.

Self-exclusion is a serious and effective step. If you want to explore it, contact your state gaming commission, or ask at the player services desk of any local property. In tribal jurisdictions, the process is run by the tribal gaming authority.
